The first days after death. The ordeal of the soul after death: what happens after death 1 day after death

The first days of the Soul after death. During the first two to three days after leaving the body, when the silver cord connecting it to the biological body breaks off, the soul having been confused for some time, enjoys relative freedom and can visit those places that were dear to her.

When an offering takes place in the church on the third day, the soul of the deceased person receives the relief from the guardian angel in the sorrow that he feels from being separated from the body because he receives the praise and offering in the church of God for her, which gives rise to good hope.
For for two days the Soul is allowed to walk on the earth where it only wishes. Therefore, a soul who loves his body roams to his native places, sometimes near the house in which he was separated from the body, sometimes near the tomb in which the body is laid, and thus spends these several days. On the third day, the Soul is commanded to ascend to heaven to worship God.

From this it should be understood that the description of the first days after death gives a general idea of the time-time of the Soul of a person, and a rule that in no way covers all situations. All modern post-mortem experiments, however fragmentary, indicate that the out-of-body state is only the beginning of the initial period of the soul's bodiless journey to the places of its earthly attachments. Some critics of the Orthodox doctrine of posthumous life find that such deviations from the general rule of "posthumous" experience are evidence of contradictions in the Orthodox doctrine, but such critics understand everything too literally. The description of the first days is by no means a dogma; it’s just a model that only formulates the most general order of posthumous experience and actually proves the immortality of the soul. Many cases, both in literature and in stories about modern experiments, where the dead were instantly alive on the first day or two after death, serve as examples of the truth that the Soul really stays near native places experiencing nastalgia. The true appearance of spirits, after this brief period of freedom of the soul, is much more rare and always happens according to God's command, but by the third day, and often much earlier, this period comes to an end.

But in order to ascend to heaven after three days, the Soul of a person passes through legions of evil spirits of the lower plane, which block her path, tease and accuse of various sins, in which they themselves involved her, during life. According to various revelations, there are up to two dozen such obstacles, the so-called "ordeals", at each stage of which one or another sin is tortured. Having gone through one ordeal, the soul comes to the next level - this is exactly the time when “living” people can help the Soul with their prayers and liturgies in the church. And only after passing all of them, the Soul can continue its journey. How terrible are these demons and ordeals, one can see from the fact that the Mother of God herself, when the Archangel Gabriel informed Her of the approach of death, prayed for His Son to deliver her soul from these demons, and in response to Her prayers the Lord Jesus Christ Himself appeared from heaven to take the soul of His Mother Blessed and take Her to heaven. Truly terrible is the third day for the soul of the deceased, and for this reason she especially needs prayers.

Then, after going through ordeals and bowing to God, the soul visits heavenly cloisters for another thirty-seven days, not yet knowing where it will remain, and only on the fortieth day it will be assigned a place until the resurrection of the dead. There is nothing strange in that, having gone through ordeals and ending the earthly, the Soul must get acquainted with the real other world, in one part of which it will remain forever. According to the revelation of the angel prep. Makarius of Alexandria, a special church commemoration of the deceased on the ninth day after death, is due to the fact that until now the soul was shown the beauties of paradise and only after that, during the rest of the forty-day period, they show her the torment and horrors of hell before on the fortieth day a place will be appointed where she will wait for the resurrection of the dead and the Last Judgment. All these numbers give a general rule, or a picture of the post-mortal reality, and, of course, not all the dead complete their journey according to this rule. We know that Theodora actually completed her visit to hell precisely on the fortieth - this is by earthly standards of time - that is, one day.

Some souls, forty days later, are in a state of anticipation of eternal joy and bliss, while others are in fear of eternal torment, which will fully begin after the Judgment. Until this time, changes in the state of Souls are possible, especially a lot depends on bringing memorial services for them at the Liturgy and other prayers.

Please explain what the 3rd, 9th and 40th day after the death of a person mean. What is going through and where is the soul of the deceased these days?

The priest Athanasius Gumerov, the inhabitant of the Sretensky monastery answers:

Our earthly being is a preparation for the future life: “men are supposed to die once, and then judgment” (Heb. 9:27). Post-mortem experiments indicate that, freed from the corporeality of the body, the soul becomes more active. The tests that she undergoes immediately after separation from the body are of a spiritual and moral nature. All that she did good and evil remains. Therefore, for the soul, from the very beginning of the afterlife (even before the Court), joy or suffering begins, depending on how she lived on earth. Rev. John Cassian writes: “the souls of the dead not only do not lose their feelings, but do not lose their dispositions, that is, hopes and fear, joys and sorrows, and something of what they expect themselves at a general trial, they begin to expect, contrary to the opinion of some infidels, that after exiting from this life they are destroyed into nothing; they become even more alive and zealously cleave to the glorification of God ”(Interview 1, Ch. 14). In the first two days, freed from the mortal body, the soul enjoys freedom and can visit the places on earth that were dear to her. But on the third day she falls into other areas. The revelation given by the angel to St. Macarius of Alexandria (reposed in 395) is known: “when an offer is made in the Church on the third day, the soul of the deceased receives relief from grief that guards it, which it feels from being separated from the body; receives because the praise and offering in the Church of God for her is perfect, why good hope is born in her. For for two days the soul is allowed to walk along the earth with the angels that are with it where it wants. Therefore, the soul, a loving body, sometimes wanders around the house in which it was separated from the body, sometimes near the tomb in which the body is laid<...> A virtuous soul goes to those places in which it used to create the truth. On the third day, the One who has risen from the dead on the third day - the God of all - commands, in imitation of His Resurrection, to ascend every Christian soul to heaven to worship all kinds of God. So, the good Church has the habit of making the offer and prayer for the soul on the third day. After worshiping God, He is commanded by Him to show the soul the various and pleasant dwellings of saints and the beauty of paradise. The soul examines all this for six days, wondering and glorifying the Creator of all this - God. Contemplating all this, she changes and forgets the sorrow that she had while being in the body. But if she is guilty of sins, then at the sight of the pleasures of the saints she begins to grieve and rebuke herself, saying: “Alas” to me! How I fussed in that world! Carried away by the satisfaction of lusts, I spent most of my life in heedlessness and did not serve God, as it should, so that I could also receive this goodness<...> After six days of considering all the joys of the righteous, she again ascends the angels to worship God. So, the Church does well, performing on the ninth day services and offerings for the departed. After the secondary worship, the Lord of all again commands to take the soul to hell and show it the places of torment there, the different branches of hell and the various unholy torments<...>In these various places of torment, the soul rushes for thirty days, trembling not to be condemned to imprisonment in them itself. On the fortieth day she again ascends to worship God; and then the judge determines a decent place for her on business<...> So, the Church does the right thing, remembering the departed and those who have received Baptism ”(St. Macarius of Alexandria. A Word on the Exodus of the Souls of the Righteous and Sinners ... -“ Christian Reading ”, 1831, part 43, pp. 123-31;“ How does the soul for the first forty days upon the exodus from the body, M., 1999, p. 13-19).

First two days after death

During the first two days, the soul enjoys relative freedom and can visit the places on earth that are dear to her, but on the third day she moves to other spheres.

Here, Archbishop John simply repeats the teaching known to the Church since the 4th century. Tradition reports that the angel who accompanied the prep. Macarius of Alexandria, said, explaining the church commemoration of the dead on the third day after death: “When an offering takes place in the church on the third day, the soul of the deceased receives relief from sorrow from the angel guarding it, which it feels from being separated from the body, because it receives praise and the offering in the church of God for her was completed, which is why good hope is born in it. For for two days the soul, along with the Angels that are with it, is allowed to walk on the earth where it wants. Therefore, the soul, a loving body, sometimes wanders near the house in which it was separated from the body, sometimes near the tomb in which the body is laid; and thus spends two days, like a bird, looking for nests for himself. A virtuous soul walks in those places in which it used to create the truth. On the third day, the one who has risen from the dead, commands, in imitation of his resurrection, to ascend to every Christian soul in heaven to worship all kinds of God. ” ["The words of sv. Macarius of Alexandria on the outcome of the souls of the righteous and sinful ”,“ Christ. reading "August 1831].

In the Orthodox rank of burial of the departed St. John Damaskin vividly describes the state of the soul, which has parted with the body, but is still on the earth, powerless to communicate with its loved ones, whom it can see: “Alas for me, a soul who is separated from a body must have a feat of strength! Alas, then how many tears, and there is no mercy! They raise their eyes to the Angels, praying idly: to men stretching out their arms, not having help. With the same love, my brethren, who thought of our short life, we ask reposed repose from Christ, and great mercy to our souls ”( The follow-up of the burial of worldly people, stichera is self-consenting, voice 2).

In a letter to the husband of his dying sister, St. Theophanes writes: “After all, the sister herself will not die; the body dies, but the face of the dying remains. Passes only to other orders of life. She is not in the body that lies beneath the saints and then, and she is not hidden in the grave. She is elsewhere. As alive as now. In the first hours and days, she will be near you. “And he just won’t say it, - yes it’s impossible to see it, otherwise it’s ... Have this in mind.” We, the remaining ones, cry for those who have departed, and it is immediately easier for them: that state is encouraging. Those who died and then entered into the body, found it a very uncomfortable housing. The sister will feel the same. She’s better there, and we’re killing, as if some misfortune had happened to her. She looks and, truly, marvels at that ”(“ Mindful Reading, August 1894).

It should be borne in mind that this description of the first two days after death gives general rule which by no means covers all situations. Indeed, most of the excerpts from Orthodox literature cited in this book do not fit this rule, and for a completely obvious reason: the saints, who were not at all attached to worldly things, lived in unceasing expectation of a transition to another world, not even attracted to places, where they did good deeds, but immediately begin their ascent to heaven. Others, like K. Ikskul, begin their ascent earlier than two days at the special permission of God's providence. On the other hand, all modern “posthumous” experiments, no matter how fragmentary they are, do not fit this rule: an out-of-body state is only the beginning of the first period of the soulless journey of the soul to the places of its earthly attachments, but none of these people were in a state of death long enough to even meet the two Angels who must accompany them.

Some critics of the Orthodox doctrine of posthumous life find that such deviations from the general rule of “posthumous” experience are evidence of contradictions in the Orthodox doctrine, but such critics understand everything too literally. The description of the first two days (as well as the following) is by no means a dogma; it is simply a model that only formulates the most general order of the posthumous experience of the soul. Many cases both in Orthodox literature and in stories about modern experiments, where the dead were instantly alive on the first day or two after death (sometimes in a dream), serve as examples of the truth that the soul really stays near the earth for a short time. (The true manifestations of the dead after this brief period of freedom of the soul are much rarer and always happen according to God's will for some special purpose, and not by someone’s own will. But by the third day, and often earlier, this period comes to an end )

The afterlife and its uncertainty are what often lead a person to think about God and the Church. Indeed, according to the teachings of the Orthodox Church and any other Christian doctrines, the human soul is immortal and it, unlike the body, exists forever.

A person is always interested in the question, what will happen to him after death, where will he go? Answers to these questions can be found in the teachings of the Church.

The soul after the death of the body shell awaits the Judgment of God

Death and the Christian

Death always remains a kind of constant companion of a person: loved ones, celebrities, relatives die, and all these losses make you think about what will happen when this guest comes to me? Attitude towards the end largely determines the course of human life - waiting for it is painful or a person has lived such a life that he is ready to appear before the Creator at any moment.

The desire not to think about it, having deleted it from thoughts is the wrong approach, because then life ceases to have value.

Christians believe that God gave man an eternal soul, as opposed to a corruptible body. And this determines the course of the whole Christian life - after all, the soul does not disappear, which means that it will certainly see the Creator and give an answer for every business. This constantly keeps the believer in good shape, not allowing the days to live thoughtlessly. Death in Christianity is a certain point of transition from worldly to heavenly life., and this is where the spirit to go after this intersection directly depends on the quality of life on earth.

Orthodox asceticism has in its writings the expression "mortal memory" - the constant keeping in mind the concept of the end of worldly existence and the expectation of a transition to eternity. That is why Christians lead a meaningful life, not allowing themselves to waste minutes.

The approach of death from this point of view is not something terrible, but quite logical and expected action, joyful. As Elder Joseph Vatopedsky said: "I waited for the train, but he still does not come."

First days after leaving

Orthodoxy has a special concept about the first days in the afterlife. This is not a strict dogma of faith, but the position taken by the Synod.

 Death in Christianity is a certain point of transition from worldly to heavenly life.

Special days after death are:

 1. Third - This is traditionally a wake day. This time is spiritually associated with the Resurrection of Christ, which occurred on the third day. St. Isidore Pelusiot writes that the process of Resurrection took Christ for 3 days, hence the idea was formed that the human spirit also goes into eternal life on the third day. Other authors write that the number 3 is of particular importance, it is called the God's number and it symbolizes faith in the Holy Trinity, therefore, it is necessary to remember a person on this day. It is in the memorial service of the third day that the Triune God is asked to absolve the deceased and forgive;
 2. Ninth - Another day of remembrance of the dead. St. Simeon of Solunsky wrote about this day as a time to recall 9 angelic ranks, to which the spirit of the deceased could be reckoned. That is how many days are given to the soul of the deceased to fully realize their transition. This is mentioned by St. Paisius in his writings, comparing a sinner with a drunkard, who during this period is sober. During this period, the soul humbles itself with its transition and says goodbye to worldly life;
 3. Fortieth - This is a special day of remembrance, because according to the legends of St. Solunsky, this number is of particular importance, because Christ was lifted up for 40 days, which means that the deceased appears on this day before the Lord. Also, the people of Israel mourned their leader Moses for just such a time. On this day, not only a prayer-petition for mercy should be heard for the deceased by God, but also a magpie.
 Important! The first month, which includes these three days, is extremely important for loved ones - they put up with the loss and begin to learn to live without a loved one.

Three of the above dates are necessary for special remembrance and prayer for the departed. During this period, their fervent prayers for the deceased are communicated to the Lord and, in accordance with the teachings of the Church, can affect the final decision of the Creator regarding the soul.

Where does the human spirit go after life

Where exactly is the spirit of the deceased? No one has an exact answer to this question, since this is a secret hidden from man by the Lord. Everyone will know the answer to this question after his repose. The only thing that is known for sure is the transition of the human spirit from one state to another - from a worldly body to an eternal spirit.

 Only the Lord can determine the place of the eternal stay of the soul

Here it is much more important to find out not “where”, but “to whom”, because it does not matter where the person will be after, the main thing is with the Lord?

Christians believe that after the transition to eternity, the Lord calls a person to court, where he determines his place of eternal residence - heaven with angels and other believers, or hell, with sinners and demons.

The doctrine of the Orthodox Church says that only the Lord can determine the place of the eternal stay of the soul and no one can influence His sovereign will. This decision is a response to the life of the soul in the body and its actions. What did she choose in life: good or evil, repentance or prideful exaltation, mercy or cruelty? Only human actions determine eternal abiding and the Lord judges by them.

According to the book of Revelation of John Chrysostom, we can conclude that the human race is waiting for two judgments - individual for each soul, and common, when all the dead will rise after the end of the world. Orthodox theologians are convinced that between the individual court and the general, the soul has the opportunity to change its sentence, through the prayers of those close to him, to the good deeds that are done in his memory, memoirs in the Divine Liturgy and commemoration and alms.

Ordeals

The Orthodox Church believes that the spirit on the way to the throne of God goes through certain ordeals or trials. Traditions of the holy fathers say that the ordeals consist in convicting evil spirits that make one doubt their own salvation, in the Lord or His Sacrifice.

The word of ordeal comes from the old Russian "Mytniya" - the place of collection of fines. That is, the spirit must pay a fine or be tested by some sins. To help pass this test can their own virtues, which the deceased has gained while being on earth.

From a spiritual point of view, this is not a tribute to the Lord, but full awareness and recognition of all that tormented a person during his life and with which he was unable to cope to the end. Only hope for Christ and His mercy can help the soul overcome this trait.

The Orthodox lives of the saints contain many descriptions of ordeals. Their stories are extremely vivid and written in sufficient detail so that you can vividly imagine all the described paintings.

 Icon of Ordeal of Blessed Theodora

A particularly detailed description can be found at St. Vasily the New, in his life, which contains the story of Blessed Theodora about her ordeals. She mentions 20 trials of sins, including:

 • the word - it can heal or kill, it is the beginning of the world, according to the Gospel of John. Sins that are contained in the word are not empty utterances, they have the same sin as material, committed acts. There is no difference between cheating on her husband or saying it out loud, dreaming - sin is the same. Such sins include rudeness, obscenity, idle talk, incitement, blasphemy;
 • a lie or a deceit - any untruth told by a person is a sin. This also includes perjury and oath-crime, which are serious sins, as well as dishonest judgment and body kit;
 • gluttony is not only the delight of one’s stomach, but also any indulgence of carnal passion: drunkenness, nicotine addiction or narcotic;
 • laziness, along with hackwork and parasitism;
 • theft - any act, the consequence of which is the appropriation of someone else's, to relate here: theft, fraud, fraud, etc .;
 • stinginess is not only greed, but also thoughtless acquisition of everything, i.e. hoarding. This category includes bribery and denial of alms, as well as extortion and extortion;
 • envy - visual theft and greed for someone else's;
 • pride and anger - they destroy the soul;
 • murder - both verbal and material, bringing to suicide and abortion;
 • fortune telling - appeal to grandmothers or psychics is a sin, it is written in the Scriptures;
 • fornication is any lascivious act: watching pornography, masturbation, erotic fantasies, etc .;
 • adultery and sodom sins.
 Important! For the Lord there is no concept of death, the spirit only passes from the material world to the non-material. But how she appears before the Creator depends only on her actions and decisions in the world.

Commemoration days

This includes not only the first three important days (third, ninth and fortieth), but any holidays and simple days when relatives remember the deceased, remember him.

The word “commemoration” means commemoration, that is, memory. And first of all, it is a prayer, and not just a thought or bitterness from separation from the dead.

Advice! Prayer is performed in order to ask the Creator for mercy for the deceased and to justify him, even if he did not deserve it himself. According to the canons of the Orthodox Church, the Lord can change His decision about the dead if he is actively prayed and asked for by his relatives, doing alms and good deeds in his memory.

It is especially important to do this in the first month and the 40th day, when the soul appears before God. For all 40 days, the magpie is read, in prayer every day, and on special days a memorial service is ordered. Together with prayer, relatives visit these days the church and the cemetery, give alms and give out memorial feasts in memory of the deceased. These commemorative dates include subsequent anniversaries of death, as well as special church holidays commemorating the dead.

The Holy Fathers also write that the deeds and good deeds of the living can also cause a change in God's sentence to the dead. The afterlife is full of secrets and mysteries, none of the living knows for sure about it. But the worldly path of each is an indicator that can indicate the place in which the human spirit will spend all eternity.

What is the ordeal? Archpriest Vladimir Golovin

The question, of course, is very interesting to many, and there are two of the most popular views on it: scientific and religious.

In terms of religion

From the point of view of science

The soul of man is immortal There is nothing but a physical shell
After the death of a person, heaven or hell awaits, depending on his actions during his life Death is the end, it is impossible to avoid or significantly extend life
Immortality is guaranteed to everyone, the only question is whether it will be eternal pleasures or endless torment The only kind of immortality you can get is in your children. Genetic sequel
Earthly life is only a brief prelude to endless existence. Life is all that you have and it should be valued the most

What happens to the soul after death?

This question interests many people, and now in Russia there is even an institution that is trying to measure the soul, weigh it and photograph it on camera. But the Vedas describe that the soul is immeasurable, it is eternal and always existing, and is equal to one ten thousandth tip of the hair, that is, very small. In practice, it is impossible to measure it with any material tools. Think for yourself how to measure intangible material devices? This is a mystery to people, a mystery.

The Vedas say that the tunnel, which is described by people who have experienced clinical death, is nothing but a channel in our body. There are 9 main openings in our body - ears, eyes, nostrils, navel, anus, genitals. In the head there is a channel called sushumna, you can feel it - if you close your ears, you will hear a noise. Techka is also a channel through which the soul can exit. She can exit through any of these channels. After death, experienced people can determine what sphere of being the soul has gone to. If it came out through the mouth, then the soul returns to the earth again, if through the left nostril - towards the moon, through the right - towards the sun, if through the navel it goes to planetary systems that are below the Earth, and if through the genitals, it falls to the lower worlds. It so happened that I saw a lot of dying people in my life, in particular the death of my grandfather. At the time of death, he opened his mouth, then there was a big exhale. His soul came out through his mouth. Thus, the life force, along with the soul, goes through these channels.

Where do the souls of dead people go

After the soul has left the body, for 40 days it will be in the place where it lived. It happens that people, after a funeral, feel that someone is present in the house. If you want to feel the state of a ghost, imagine how you eat ice cream in a plastic bag: there are opportunities, but you can’t do anything, taste it or touch anything, you can’t move physically. When a ghost looks in the mirror, he does not see himself and feels shock. Hence the custom of covering mirrors.

The first day after the death of the physical body, the soul is shocked by the fact that it cannot understand how it will live without the body. Therefore, in India there is a custom to destroy the body immediately. If the body is dead for a long time, the soul will constantly spin around it. If the body is buried, she will see the decomposition process. Until the body decays, the soul will be with it, because in life it was very attached to its outer shell, practically identified itself with it, the body was the most valuable and dear.

On the 3-4th day, the soul recovers a little, gets untied from the body, walks around the neighborhood, and returns to the house. Relatives do not need to arrange tantrums and loud sobs, the soul hears everything, and experiences these torments on itself. At this time, one must read the scriptures and literally explain what the soul needs to do next. Spirits hear everything, they are next to us. Death is a transition to a new life, death as such does not exist. Just as during life we change clothes, so the soul changes one body to another. The soul during this period does not experience physical pain, but psychological, she is very worried and does not know what to do next. Therefore, it is necessary to help the soul and calm it.

Then you need to feed her. When stress passes, the soul wants to eat. This condition also appears as in life. The subtle body desires a taste. And in response to this we put a glass of vodka and bread. Think for yourself when you are hungry and thirsty, they offer you a dry crust of bread and vodka! How will you be?

You can facilitate the further life of the soul after death. To do this, the first 40 days do not need to touch anything in the room of the deceased and do not begin to share his things. After 40 days, on behalf of the deceased, one can do some good deed and transfer the strength of this deed to him - for example, on his birthday hold a post and declare that the power of the post passes to the deceased. In order to help the deceased, you need to earn this right. Just putting a candle is not enough. In particular, you can feed the priests or give alms, plant a tree, and all this must be done on behalf of the deceased.

The scriptures say that after 40 days the soul comes to the bank of a river called Virajya. This river is teeming with various fish and monsters. There is a boat near the river, and if the soul has enough piety to pay for the boat, it swims, and if not, it swims - this is the way to the courtroom. After the soul has crossed this river, it is waiting for the death god Yamaraj, or in Egypt he is called Anibus. A conversation is being held with him, his whole life is shown on film. There fate is determined: in what body the soul will be born again and in what world.

Performing certain ceremonies, the ancestors can greatly help the dead, facilitate their further path, and even literally pull them out of hell.

Does a person feel approaching his death

If in terms of forebodings, then there are examples in history when people predicted their death over the next few days. But this does not mean that every person is capable of this. And one should not forget about the great power of coincidences.

It may be interesting to know if a person is able to understand that he is dying:

 • We all feel a deterioration in our own condition.
 • Although not all internal organs have pain receptors, there are more than enough of them in our body.
 • We even feel the arrival of a banal ARVI. What to speak about death.
 • Regardless of our desires, the body does not want to die in a panic and activates all the resources to fight with a serious condition.
 • This process may be accompanied by seizures, pain, severe shortness of breath.
 • But not every sharp deterioration in well-being indicates the approach of death. Most often, the alarm will be false, so do not panic in advance.
 • Do not try to cope with conditions close to critical on your own. Call for help everyone you can.

Signs of the approaching death

With the approach of death, a person may experience some physical and emotional changes, such as:

 • Excessive drowsiness and weakness, at the same time, wakefulness periods are reduced, energy is dying out.
 • Breathing is changing, periods of rapid breathing are replaced by respiratory arrests.
 • Hearing and vision change, for example, a person hears and sees things that others do not notice.
 • Appetite worsens, a person drinks and eats less than usual.
 • Changes in the urinary and gastrointestinal systems. Your urine may turn dark brown or dark red, and there may also be poor (impenetrable) stools.
 • Body temperature varies from very high to very low.
 • Emotional change, a person is not interested in the outside world and certain details of everyday life, such as time and date.
